Before Calling an Engineer - Please run through the PC Checklist below:
Believe it or not - all of the information provided below is drawn directly from my day to day experiences as a professional mobile computer engineer!
If your computer will not work, before calling out an engineer, please carry out these few simple obvious checks first:
1) Is the computer plugged into the mains?
2) Is the monitor mains lead plugged either into the computer on directly into the mains - is the monitor light on the front lit up?
3) Are you in the middle of a power cut - do the lights work?
4) Has the fuse blown in the mains plug on either the computer or monitor power leads?
5) If the computer & monitor are plugged into a mains extension multi socket is the neon indicator lit up?
6) Is the other end of the multi socket lead (the one with the mains plug on it) plugged into a mains wall socket that is switched on?
7) Has the fuse blown in the multi socket or in its mains plug?
8) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the computer or monitor recently?
9) Is the computer connected to a UPS? (un-interuptable power supply unit - a small box near the PC) If so, is that working?
10) If the computer & monitor initially start up ok, but the computer will not boot up - is there a floppy disk in the drive?
If your Computer works, but the Monitor still does not light up
1) Is the monitor's on/off switch in the "on" position - is the monitor light on the front lit up?
2) Is the monitor definitely plugged into a mains source? either via the PC or the mains socket directly
3) Is the monitor's video lead plugged into the PC?
4) Have you moved the PC recently without disconnecting the leads & pulled the monitor lead, causing the video card to dislodge from it's socket?
5) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the monitor recently?
6) Has any smoke, sparks or strange crackling noises come from the PC or monitor recently?
If your Computer works, but the Printer will not work, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is the printer plugged into the mains? either directly, or if it has its own power supply, is that plugged into the mains?
2) Are the indicator lights on the printer lit up?
3) Is the printer lead plugged into the printer?
4) Is the printer lead also plugged into the computer's printer socket?
5) Is there some paper in the printers in tray?
6) Is there any ink (if it is an inkjet printer - or toner if it is a laser printer) in the printer? - Are the ink or toner cartridges empty?
7) Can you print a "Microsoft Windows Test Page" by clicking "Control Panel" - "Printers" - "Properties" - "Print Test Page"?
8) Is the printer actually physically connected to your PC or is it shared on a network?
9) If it is shared on a network, is the PC it is connected to switched on & working properly?
9) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid in the printer recently?
10) Has anyone been messing about with the computer's settings recently?
If your Computer works, but the Keyboard will not work, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is the keyboard plugged into the computer?
2) Is there a key stuck down?
3) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the keyboard recently?
4) Has someone accidentally severed the lead?
If your Computer works, but the Mouse will not work, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is the mouse plugged into the computer?
2) If the mouse is erratic, have you cleaned the rollers recently? (remove the ball securing ring underneath by rotating it)
3) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the mouse recently?
4) Has someone accidentally severed the lead?
If your Computer works, but the Internet/Email/Modem will not work, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is the modem's phone lead plugged into the phone wall socket?
2) Have you paid your phone bill recently?
3) Is the phone line working?
4) Is there a dial tone from the wall socket? - check this by plugging a standard telephone into the socket
5) If you have an old internal analogue modem, does the modem make a noise when you try to connect? (not all modems do this - or the modem's sound could be turned off)
6) If it is a Broadband router/modem, is it actually plugged into the PC?
7) If it is an Broadband router/modem, is it also plugged into the mains via its own power supply and is the ADSL sync light on the front of the ADSL router lit solidly & not flashing?
8) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the modem recently?
9) Has anyone been messing about with the computer settings recently?
10) has the Broadband router/modem been installed in the PC correctly? (For an analogue modem, check it in "Conrol Panel" - "Modems" - "Diagnostics"
If your Computer works, but the Network will not work, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is the network lead actually plugged into the back of the computer? & if so, is there a light on next to the network connector?
2) Is the network lead also plugged into the wall socket, network switch, hub or router?
3) Have you had a power cut recently?
4) Does everyone else's office network connection work ok? - have you paid your phone bill recently?
5) If you have a Dedicated File Server in another part of the room or building - is it switched on?
6) Do you have a Network Hub or High Speed Switch? if so are they also switched on & working?
7) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the File Server, Network Hub or High Speed Switch recently?
8) Has anyone been messing about with the network settings on either your PC or on the file server recently?
If your Computer & Network works ok, but your Network Email & Internet doesn't, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Do you know how to use Internet & Email?
2) Was the Email & Internet system setup correctly in the first place?
3) Do you subscribe to an Internet Service Provider?
4) Have you paid the Internet Service Provider's bill recently?
5) Have you had a power cut recently?
6) Is the Email Server switched on & working properly?
7) Are you authorised to have Email & Internet within your company?
8) Has anyone been messing about with the Email/Internet settings on either your PC or on the file server recently?
9) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid on the Email/Internet server recently?
If your Computer & Network works ok, but your Tape Backup doesn't, before calling out an engineer, please check the following:
1) Is there a tape in the drive?
2) Has anybody been messing with the backup settings?
3) Have you spilt tea, coffee or any other liquid in the backup tape drive recently?
If your Tape Backup does not work, for any reason whatsoever - Call the Engineer Immediately! - get is sorted out as soon as possible
